1 " This magazine is made up of a number of articles and other programs chained together like the welcome tape that came with your computer. It may not always work with microdrives."
1 " The best way to read it is to load the articles in sequence following the on-screen prompts. However, you can load individual programs using the program names in the table of contents on the next page."
   1 " SPECTRUM COMPUTING - ISSUE 10 NOV/DEC
1 " Please note that some files may need more than one load, but they all auto-run and tell you when to start and stop the tape."
1 " You can SAVE and LOAD games and copy the screen to a ZX printer. The vocabulary containsmost of the usual adventuring terms, some of which are listed on the cassette inlay to get youstarted. You are also advised toavoid violence, as most of the others are stronger than you."
1 " Welcome to the nightmare worldof Hyperload, er, I mean Wally Week. In this sequel to Auto- mania, Wally is dreaming about trying to wake himself up in time to go to work. To do this he must wind the alarm clock."
1 " Welcome to our Tenth issue."
1 " This program's predecessor, subtitled 'Manic Mechanic', may be thought to have a model in 'Manic Miner', but those with incredible memories going right back to 1983 may remember a progcalled 'Miner Forty-niner'. Thistype of program is becoming a"
1 " This one looks like it was originally written for a vector graphics display, rather than the TV raster used by most home computers. Vector graphics is good for fast line drawing, but not for colouring in shapes. Notfor colour at all, really."
1 " This is the official Atari version on license to Quicksilvawho are now part of Argus Press Software, as is this magazine. The whole lot belongs to BritishElectric Traction, the company who recently sold Wembley Sta- dium."
1 " This is an arcade adventure with lots of screens and objectsto collect. Anything that moves is dangerous, depleting your store of 'snooze energy' when touched. Occasional snacks can be collected for refreshment, but some hazards kill instantly."
1 " There are other characters, some of which move around inde- pendently and may even help you in your quest. You can use lineslike 'Virgil give me axe' to getthem to cooperate, but they haveminds of their own and might notdo as asked.":
1 " The object is to lure zombies over the edge of buildings, say no more. Working out how to playis part of the fun, and the in- structions don't give much away. There is a demo mode though."
1 " The huge sprites sometimes clash a bit with the marvelouslydetailed screens because of the Spectrum attributes limitation, but the overall effect is almostlike a cartoon film. Wish I knewhow many screens there are.":
1 " The graphics screens and replyto input are very fast, and we didn't realise that a large partof the program was BASIC until we broke in. Where speed is a factor, machine code routines are called."
1 " The action is very realistic, with the banking into the bends having an authentic feel. It is actually possible to find the racing line through the curves if you get the speed right. The motor noise changes with speed, which is very helpful feedback."
1 " Sheer speed is what this race simulation is all about. As a motorcycle enthusiast, I was most upset to be consistently beaten by all 39 of the computercontrolled bikes. Try as I mightmy best finish was next to last."
1 " Sandy White left in a utility for Prang to find and reveal to you. There are actually two cit-ies in the memory, one of which is kept unchanged for use by thedemo mode, but you can use it ifyou know the magic word."
1 " Peter Cooke's name appears on the title page of this graphic adventure. He sure gets around, writing for us and for Goldstar,as well. He also seems to have an intimate knowledge of the nether regions."
1 " Options incude a choice of 10 genuine racing circuits, choice of number of laps, and a prac- tice mode to learn the circuits without other riders getting in the way. Mind you, it's not easyto get amongst them in the race!":
1 " One thing you don't get is spectacular crashes. If you run off the road, you just lose yourmomentum, and if you collide with other riders you get off lightly with an enforced stop that knocks you way down the field. There are characteristic noises for skidding and so forthso you know what's happening."
1 " Once past the 'Trickyload' tape ordeal, this sequel to 'AntAttack' surpasses its pappy's standard, with more colour and enhanced sound. It is even fast-er than 'Ant' as you can use a helicopter, not just for moving, but also to rebuild the city."
1 " Kempston, Sinclair, and Protekjoysticks are supported. You do want a joystick, too. The key- board doesn't make it at this sort of pace."
1 " Kempston, Protek, and Spectrumjoysticks are supported, and thecontrols are cleverly worked outso that the 'fire' botton does everything, unlike the multi-keyapproach of 'Ant'. Bricks are used for ammunition, giving new meaning to shooting up the town.":
1 " Kempston and Sinclair joystickinterfaces are supported, and a definable set of control keys will take care of other types. Left, right and jump are all youneed to worry about, so the key-board is quite adequate."
1 " I would recommend this programwithout qualification were it not for the fast loader which did cause problems loading with our machine. As it stands, you would be taking a chance that your equipment would LOAD it.":
1 " I only mention it because we are bound to be reviewing more and more software from Argus, and you might wonder about our impartiality. Well, go ahead andwonder. My conscience will be nomurkier with you poking at it.":
1 " Every screen we saw had a pic-ture, but you can turn them off if you want. We got as far as the 5th circle of Hell, so either the game is not terribly difficult or the environment suited our peculiar merits."
1 " Enter 'r' instead and you can play your own game into the demomode. Using the demo sets both cities the same, so you can haveyour own demo running in a city of your own design, or avoid thedemo and build two cities.":
1 " Dare I compare this one with The Hobbit? Better not, as I've never seen The Hobbit. Still, itis ahead of most I have seen, and it won't make a Hobbit size hole in your wallet.":
1 " By keeping the same look on a different display system, you sacrifice the speed of the one without gaining any of the ad- vantages of the other. Still, ifyou liked the pukka arcade game, perhaps you wouldn't want the appearance changed."
1 " At Menu time, key 'P'(must usecaps-shift, so select a joy- stick first or game will start) and the INPUT prompt appears. Now enter 'SPACEMAN' and you getthe prompt again. Then enter 'xchg' and you will swap to the alternate city or back again."
1 " As 'Battlezone in your own home' it works very well, but asnew releases go, it's something of a reproduction antique. (Handthis reviewer his cards, he'll never work again-Ed.)":
1 " Apparently someone thinks thatspace invaders has a bigger future than pitch invaders. The recent Argus purchase of 16/48 magazine, the other Spectrum tape mag, indicates that Argus is going to continue to grow."
